Fill a hole in door panel with Bondo?
Tuesday, January 5th, 2010Phil asked:
My car’s got 103,000 miles on it, but it’s still in decent shape. The only problem I’m having is that I’ve got rust in the door panel. I don’t know much about cars/auto repair, but I was thinking that maybe I could use some rust converter on it, then cover it with bondo. Some people agree with me, and some tell me I need to go to a body shop. The rust has eaten through the outside of the panel, and the inside panel (it’s got two layers, which was a surprise to me) is showing. It’s only the outer panel that’s rusted. The hole’s about 2 inches in diameter, and it’s like a quarter inch deep (since the inside layer is intact). I don’t know if it’s worth spending the money to take it to a body shop, since it’s already got over a hundred thousand miles on it. Plus, I’m in college right now, so I don’t have a lot of money to throw at the problem. But, if I’m just going to have to put a bunch more money into it later, then it may be worth taking it to a body shop right now. I don’t have access to any metal working tools, either, so I can’t even really remove the rust properly.
