Many people will perceive at this film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical spectacular, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA with mixed emotions. There are people who will be upset that Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, who played the current Christine and Phantom respectively, were not allowed to recreate their signature roles. There will also be people who’ll be disappointed that this version is not a literal translation of the stage musical. Finally, we have the critics of both Webber and director Joel Schumacher, who have both been accused of discouraged excess in previous projects in their individual careers. Taken as a film version however, this PHANTOM stands the test of time, not only as a astonishing musical film, but as one of the more faithful versions of Gaston Laroux’s romance/horror unique.

Starting with a dark and white prologue, the film tells the fable of budding opera star Christine Daae and the two men who fight for her heart: the valid Viscount who she knew in childhood, and the mysterious Phantom of the Paris Opera House who hides his ugliness unhurried a half-mask while sponsoring Christine’s career. Like the stage production, this film is awash in magnificent colors and sets that would place many epics to shame. It’s well balanced by solid performances that relieve propel the romantic, if melodramatic, anecdote along.

Gerard Butler makes for a wonderfully gloomy and obsessive Phantom, while allowing the character to keep the audience’s sympathy. Miranda Richardson is solid as the dour Madame Giry, who knows the Phantom’s secret. Minnie Driver easily gets the most laughs as the over-bearing diva, Carlotta. (It’s intelligent to trace that Ms. Driver’s singing is dubbed in the film trustworthy, while she actually sings the unique closing credits melody “Learn to be Lonely.”) Patrick Wilson makes for a stalwart, if somewhat bland, Viscount. But the strongest impression is made by the heavenly Emmy Rossum. Only in her slack teens when filming, she turns in a wonderful performance with a crystal positive protest that does justice to Webber’s win. Joel Schumacher does a strong enough job in directing this film, allowing the music and the screenplay that he co-wrote with Webber to shine.

In the kill, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a savory spectacle that does justice in its occupy device to both the stage fresh and Laroux’s book. As such, this is a film I highly recommend.

You know that a movie works when it follows you long after you’ve left the movie theater. I saw the Broadway tour of “Phantom of the Opera” a few years ago and it has been my approved musical since. I treasure it more than Cats, 42nd Street, West Side Sage, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon…you name it. Its romanticism and glorious songs objective blew me away.

I was then somewhat hesitant to peek the film version, fearing that it would not live up to my expectations. A puny over two hours later and I found myself crying over the Phantom (Gerard Butler) and his savor for the young Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum) as she decides between him or the nobleman Raoul (Patrick Wilson) .

In short, I cherish this movie! It was everything I had hoped it to be and more. The account is faithful to the stage version but it also gives the audience a closer study into the lives of the three main characters. The art direction, sets and costumes are attractive and breath-taking. And the songs are brought to life superbly by the talented cast of young newcomers (Rossum, Wilson) and film veterans (Miranda Richardson, Ciaran Hinds, Simon Callow) .

I know many would argue that Michael Crawford was a obliging Phantom…that is, except for me. I always felt that Crawford’s drawl was too high-pitched and not manly enough. To me, Gerard Butler is more effective Phantom. Apart from being incredibly fair (under that make-up), colossal and well built, he also has this rough and raspy command that is very masculine and rotund of passion. He IS the Phantom! Emmy Rossum has a hauntingly aesthetic vow and has an innocence and sweetness that fits perfectly for Christine. Her squawk gives me goosebumps! Patrick Wilson’s romantic direct contrasts well with that of the Phantom’s. After all, one is supposed to be a nobleman and the romantic hero while the other is unlit, mysterious and brooding (like the misunderstood Quasimodo of “Hunchback of the Notre Dame.”) But even without the singing, Gerard Butler turns in a memorable and passionate performance as the Phantom and you really do feel for him in the kill. If there was one fault to this film, for me, it would be Minnie Driver’s Carlotta. She was so over the top that I sometimes found her grating.

All in all, however, I walked out of the theater wanting to recognize “Phantom of the Opera” again and again (I’ve now seen it twice and counting) . I couldn’t net the music out of my head and have since purchased the CD. I can’t wait for the dvd to reach out so I can inspect it over and over. I highly recommend it to fans of the stage version, music lovers and incurable romantics everywhere. And if you loved the songs, be positive to steal up the equally obedient soundtrack. This phantom will haunt you long after you’ve left the movie theater….and I have gladly fallen under its spell. Fine!

The 2003-2004 television season was one in which critics and fans expressed their growing outrage at the decay of standards in commercial television. On the one hand, the WB decided to destroy the critically acclaimed ANGEL despite an unprecedented fan pain to achieve the present. A growing stream of increasingly offensive reality shows made many wonder if there was any future for scripted television, or whether we were doomed to peer shows like the widely condemned THE SWAN. But for many, the grievous point of the entire season was the cancellation by FOX of the amazing unique display WONDERFALLS after only four episodes, despite a host of big reviews, many of them proclaiming it the finest fresh indicate of the year. More than this, it was as if FOX were sure for the present to fail, first placing it on Friday evenings (the worst night of the week for attracting viewers) for three weeks, before putting it on Thursday night opposite a host of the most celebrated shows on TV, therefore dooming it to grievous ratings. With the colossal reviews, one would have imagined that FOX would have found the present a current time slot and built an advertising and promotional campaign around the critics’ ravings.

Luckily, WONDERFALLS is being released with the four unusual episodes and nine more that were completed but not released. The enormous news for those who saw those first four shows is that the next nine are even better. Indeed, if you were mad at the cancellation of the explain based solely on those four episodes, you will go ballistic when you glimpse how capable these others are. The writers were obviously in defense mode from the first. One of the executive producers, Tim Minear, had been victimized the previous year when he served as executive producer of FIREFLY, which FOX similarly killed prematurely. This time, they assumed that the thirteen episodes might be all they got. As a result, WONDERFALLS is essentially a single self-contained chronicle in thirteen parts. It could easily have led to a second season with recent sage lines, but the one season they did effect tells a single myth, with no major loose ends at all by the waste of the final one.

As most who have heard of the reveal know, WONDERFALLS is the chronicle of Jaye, a slacker living in Niagara Falls, NY (though most of the footage at the Falls is from the Canadian side) and working in a menial job in a souvenir gift shop. Her life is mundane and unpromising, when suddenly one day inanimate animals launch talking to her. A lot of people who hear this aspect of the explain are turned off, but trust me, it really won’t be an remark for long for anyone who gives the indicate a chance. We never do learn why the animals talk to Jaye (though in one spectacular episode a bronze monkey, in response to her expect of why they are all singling her out, tells her, “Because you listen”) . In one episode advance the waste of the season there are hints that Jaye might actually be a spirit seer, and if so it is highly satirical that in American consumer society that she would be addressed by artificial, utterly fallacious animals instead of the trusty animals that Native American seers acknowledged as spirit guides.

The animals don’t really give Jaye great choice in the matter of whether she is going to brand their commands. She learns very swiftly that if she doesn’t do their bidding, they will drive her crazy by such stratagems as singing endlessly “One Hundred Bottles of Beer On the Wall.” She also learns that if she refuses to do their bidding, things can go very abominable very mercurial, and that if she does things can go miraculously just. For instance, she is commanded to do a number of things through consecutive episodes that apparently kill a potential relationship with Eric, the young bartender who came to Niagara on his honeymoon, only to have his wife (played by FIREFLY alum Jewel Staite, as unlovable in this role as she was adorable as Kaylee in that prove) cheat on him their first night there. Eric seems perfect for the prickly Jaye, but the animals don’t seem to want to cooperate. I won’t give away the demolish of the series, but I assume the final episodes waste about as perfectly as one could hope. After thirteen episodes in which Jaye has functioned as a pawn of fate, seeing her finally a exiguous jubilant and yell is a extraordinary moment.

The cast is absolutely first rate, and by the extinguish of the series all obtain a tall contribution. Caroline Dhavernas is really lovely as Jaye. She is not supposed to be a wonderful or lovable or nice person. She definitely isn’t a saint. As she puts it in one episode, in which she inadvertently saves a baby from injury, “I’m not a baby saver!” She ends up being a obliging person despite her believe best efforts to the contrary. Tyron Leitso is enormously likable as Eric, who seems to be design too nice of a guy to be alive to with a brat like Jaye. But the chemistry between Jaye and Eric is vast, especially as their relationship gets enormously complicated by life (and inanimate animals) later in the season. At first I was stunned that Jaye’s family was going to play such a prominent role in the series, but all the performers were so exceptional that it ended up being one of the show’s greatest assets. William Sandler as her doctor father, Diane Scarwid as her author mother, and Kate Finneran as her lawyer sister (all three highly successful in their jobs) were colossal and befriend to emphasize how unsuccessful in life Jaye has been.. And I really liked Lee Race as her brother Aaron, a doctoral student in religion who is the first to find on that Jaye has an original relationship with the powers that be via groundless animals (something he first suspects when he catches her talking to a cow coffee creamer) . And Tracie Thomas is quite cute as Mahandra, Jaye’s best friend and the surreptitious lover of Aaron (a fact only revealed to the other characters only in the final episode) .

This is one of my popular series of all time, and while I profoundly regret that FOX didn’t give it a chance, I am grateful that the producers managed to negate a smart and compelling sage. And I loved the setting in Niagara Falls. It was one of those rare shows where very nearly everything was perfect, except that it appeared on a network bustle by the mentally challenged. Explore this! I promise one of the most arresting experiences of your viewing life.

“Wonderfalls” was one of those outstanding cult shows that burn lustrous and briefly — it lasted only four episodes before being yanked, with nine more as yet unaired. Now fans of this cult reveal are rewarded with the chunky series, in all its witty, quirky glory.

Twentysomething Jaye Tyler (Caroline Dhavernas) is an underachieving slacker. She has a philosophy degree from Brown University, but now works as a shopgirl at Niagara Falls and lives in a trailer. Needless to say, her ultra-successful family finds this galling and disturbing, even though they themselves are far from perfect — her sister Sharon (Katie Finneran) is a lesbian, her parents are splitting, and her brother is unprejudiced a weirdo.

Then weirder things happen to Jaye. Suddenly toys are talking to her, and prompting her to succor the people around her — returning purses, dealing with ghosts, helping an former enemy from high school, and deal with a long-dead Indian girl. Following the instructions of her “muses,” Jaye begins to learn a few things about other people, and the quality of kindness.

It’s an original belief for a TV prove — an embittered young woman hears “muses” talking to her, including a stuffed lizard, lawn flamingos and a brass monkey. Most people would honest check themselves into a padded cell, but that doesn’t perform for scintillating TV watching. So instead, it becomes a deeply warped inspirational series.

What sets it apart from other series is the surreal touch and despicable sense of humor. It’s never made definite why Jaye hears toys and bookends talking cryptically to her — is it God? Aliens? Her contain mind? Pantheistic souls in everything? Nothing is made specific, which makes it all the weirder and more spicy — especially since the toys give her advice even when she doesn’t want it.

And the humor can be beyond irregular, but is always comical, such as Jaye arguing with a cow creamer (shades of P.G. Wodehouse? ) that she doesn’t want a pancake. Another example is a solemn, intense moment after she scatters a deceased person’s ashes…. and promptly gets fined for littering. The dialogue is witty and well-written — not in a laugh track procedure, but in a smile-and-chuckle-softly procedure.

Caroline Dhavernas does a phenomenal job as Jaye. She narrowly avoids the irritable teen/twentysomething cliche, making Jaye’s dissatisfaction with her family and life seem realistic. She can be noxious and incisive and angsty, but can also be sweet and even vulnerable. The supporting cast, such as nice-guy bartender Eric (Tyron Leitso) and Jaye’s bizarro overachiever family, are surprisingly well-rounded for such quirky characters.

“Wonderfalls” is destined to remain a cult hit — glorious, unfamiliar and thoroughly novel. It didn’t last long, but now everyone can appreciate what there was of it. Absolutely wonder-fall.

Where is a good place to sell classic Volkswagons?

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010
Justin asked:

I have a 74 Super Beetle I am trying to sell. Its in good shape and based on these classic car trader websites, I am asking an exceptionally low price for a car in good shape. Its by no means showroom quality but it runs well and looks great inside and out. I am trying to poll you car guys who might know an outlet for something that better than a starting point for a project car, but not a Showroom car. Auto trader insists I post with the classiccartrader.com but they charge 90 dollars a month for an ad. I have it posted through Craig’s List and the local “Recycler”. I don’t mind paying to post, just so long as it sells. Any of you guys might have an Idea? Maybe a Volkswagen enthusiast site? Thanks a million.

We’ve been watching the DVD’s as a family. Nice, desirable represent, fine sound, decent packaging, a few extra features and the modern titles perform this a nice DVD place. Here’s hoping that they bring (at least) several seasons of this point to to DVD. This prove was a classic and they really don’t beget them like this any more. The plot consists of single sided disks in a plastic sleeve holding several DVD’s. The episode titles and descriptions are printed on the inside of the front sleeve which can be read through the sure plastic cloak (very similar to Gomer Pyle packaging – IF you have that space) .

Finally, after 50 years, the first season (the whole season) of Bonanza is coming in a 2 volume area! I can’t wait to peek it! Hopefully the describe and sound will be great improved from the other 32 random episodes that have near out from different producers over the years. Lets hope the other 13 seasons will be appearing soon!

A stark ultra realistic film about the organised crime operations of the Naopolitan “Mafia”, called The Camorra. Do not ask “The Sopranos” or “Goodfellas” in style, no slick lines or flashy clothes. This film is almost documentary style, showing the tiresome dail grind and grim reality of the struggle to gather paid. A must notice for fans of mob films, with top-notch cinematography.

Gomorrah is an unforgettable film. Its theme is certainly the Camorra, the mighty criminal organization, but what makes this film so memorable, such an unforgettable experience is its artistic value, the power of every single scene. For Matteo Garrone, a ragged director of photography, every scene is a painting in motion. Unforgettable close-ups, upsetting and disturbing, this is a original film.

After a itsy-bitsy spurt of funny relief (complete with booby traps), “Bleach Volume 20″ hurtles befriend into the conflict with the Bounts, except the enemy now have a fresh weapon to suck souls from the living. The fourth episode is method too heavy on the flashbacks, but otherwise it’s a solid introduction to the Heinous Belief of the Bounts, whose individual members begin to demonstrate their personalities.

Kon, Noba, Ririn and Kuroudo determine to booby-trap Ichigo’s house in case of Bount invasion, but Ichigo is unimpressed (“Sizable, they can wash their hands”) and wants them to purchase them all down. Deeply offended, the three novel modsouls resolve to display Ichigo the error of his ways — of course, it backfires spectacularly.

Meanwhile, the mysterious unusual dolls — called “bitto”– have started sucking the souls from living humans (and yes, I do like that phrase), which increases the Bounts’ powers but also acts like a drug to their bodies and minds. It also causes some rank division in the Bounts’ ranks, as one of them tries to refuse the living souls — and a high-flying Kariya shows his nastier colors openly.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bleach, Vol. 20! Click Here

Hitsugaya sends a team of lieutenant-class Soul Reapers to the living world, while Ichigo and his friends go patrolling to rep the bitto. Renji is badly injured by them while saving a young boy, and Rukia and Orihime are yanked into a fight with the Bount Yoshi. And when Ichigo’s buddy Keigo is attacked by the Bitto, Ichigo enters a very personal duel against the Bount Koga and his newly supercharged doll, spellbinding Koga’s memories of another young man he once knew.

One of the things that annoys me most about the “Bleach” filler episodes is the flashbacks — while the series has always had plenty of flashbacks, the fifteen-minute saga of how Koga’s teenage buddy Cain died a century or so ago doesn’t really add anything to the storyline. It also interrupts a truly awesome fight scene between Ichigo and a newly superspiky Dalk, leaving the episode feeling choppy.

Other than that, this quartet of episodes is fairly solid, with an even balance of horror-action (as the bittos swarm over Karakura town and turn people to dust) and comedy (“FEEL THE POWER OF JUSTICE!” Ichigo bellows when using a magic headband, apt before it slams him into a chainlink fence) . And there are some bad fights brewing, especially since Ichigo doesn’t seem able to defend himself against Dalk, while Orihime and a handicapped Rukia are faced with a Bount woman with a talking fan and sword.

Obviously Koga is the one with the most character development in this one, with the tale of a humdrum surrogate son who is probably never going to be mentioned again. But Kariya starts really showing his fair colors when he has the living-soul juice, becoming cocky and casually brutal — even forcing the juice down the throat of terrible Mabashi, who apparently starts cracking like an egg because of it.

And the gang of modsouls provide some amusing relief when they situation up their cute yet droll shrimp traps (“My trap’s a success! It does more than trap the victim — it makes them topple face-first into a pie!” Kon rejoices), and masquerade as a Bount doll in their small bug-armor costumes. It’s a frothy minute tale, but it’s cute and rather comic — especially when Rukia is being blissful senseless by bunnies, and Renji finds himself swinging around a broom instead of a sword.

“Bleach Volume 20″ is a solid initiate to the true battles against the Bount, albeit marred a bit by a pointless flashback that grinds everything to a stop. Quiet, has enough action and comedy to be fun.

I was fifteen years ragged when “Brian’s Song” premiered as a “Movie of the Week” on ABC-TV. I had no interest in sports then (I quiet don’t), and had no intentions of watching this movie, but my dad persuaded me. “Honest examine the first few minutes,” he said. He knew that this was NOT a sports movie. He had read Gale Sayers’ book “I Am Third” (upon which this movie is partially based), and knew that this was a movie about PEOPLE, not about football. The fact that the two lead characters are football players is almost incidental. This is a movie about friendship, savor and courage. Needless to say, I watched it from initiate to accomplish, and have watched it many times since. Although its roots as a TV movie are determined (the production values are nothing more than ordinary), “Brian’s Song” is one of the most astounding films ever made, a particularly mighty achievement when you assume its length of only 74 minutes. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams, both virtual unknowns at the time, play Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers with a sense of realism, and with respect for their real-life counterparts. Jack Warden is righteous (as always) as coach George Halas, and Shelley Fabares and Judy Scoot turn in heavenly performances as Joy Piccolo and Linda Sayers. David Huddleston and Bernie Casey beget the most of their exiguous parts, and even real-life Chicago Bears provide some pleasing moments, particularly the “hazing” sequence. The proper performances, along with William Blinn’s beautifully-written teleplay, hold the action from becoming mawkish or sappy, Buzz Kulik’s direction brought out the best in his actors, and Michel Legrand’s collect comments on the emotions in the film with exactly the good tone. (Legrand’s penchant for marking musical cues to sudden movement onscreen is essential, and the fine theme is one of the most emotionally charged pieces of music ever written.) The film ends on a freeze-frame of James Caan’s face over narration by Jack Warden of William Blinn’s words, and when that musical theme pulls out all the stops after Warden’s narration ends, well…even the Chicago Bears themselves would be dissolved in tears. It’s one of my all-time popular movies, and I would recommend it without reservation to anyone, sports fan or not. Thanks, Dad.

The DVD version includes an unusual short featurette, “Gale Sayers: First and Goal” in which present-day Gale Sayers discusses the movie and his career. It’s inspiring, but nothing special. Also included in audio commentary by Williams and Caan. Caan is a cutup and does most of the talking, and diminutive of any loyal substance is said, but it IS quite spellbinding, and definitely worth another viewing.

But then, “Brian’s Song” is ALWAYS worth another viewing…

I was really upset… Why tamper with success, and why remake one of the most elegant movies ever! I saw Brian’s song during its new broadcast wait on in 1971, and concept it was one of the best. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams are top-notch as Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers. The supporting cast, including Shelly Fabares as Joy and Judy Lag as Linda are also valid as is Jack Warden as Papa Believe Halas. If you really want to behold this movie go for the novel!
